The event took place on Sunday 27th of August at Tayside Airgun Club’s (TAG) ground at Aughterhouse near Dundee. It was a welcome return to TAG as last years shoot had to be moved to Dunfermline FT Club at short notice due to a clash of events.
As anyone who has ever attended the outdoor event can testify to, the weather is usually pretty awful. However, the sun was blazing down and aside from gusting winds that seemed to come from all directions, conditions were good. An unfortunate side effect of the wind was its ability to carry birdshot from the nearby clay pigeon shooting in our direction from time to time. Everyone was wearing safety glasses so this occasional occurrence didn’t put anyone off.
The day started at 11.30am with the Police Pistol event. The gusting winds were having a very noticeable effect on shooters’ scores and any notion of personal bests and highest ever competition totals went out the proverbial window. “Damage limitation” was the name of the game today. After all the scores had been totalled, Craig Leslie and Ian Kennedy took 2nd and 3rd places respectfully for Tayside and 1st place went to Richard McDonald from Glenrothes Target Shooting Club (GTSC). A special mention has to go to Wesley Giles who had only just sighted his new Rohm in that very morning and came in an excellent 4th.
After lunch it was on to the Steel Challenge event. The wind was still coming in from all directions and without the protection of the awning that had been used to cover the turning target assembly from any potential rain, times were also noticeably affected. Richard McDonald and Chris Whytock from GTSC came in 1st and 2nd respectively and special mention goes to Colin Young from Tayside who looked really surprised to come in 3rd.
Overall, Kevin Graham from GTSC must get a mention. He came in 13th in Police Pistol and 10th in Steel Challenge after only taking up shooting 6 weeks ago. Well done!
Everyone seemed to have a great day and several people went home somewhat red faced after daylong exposure to the big orange thing in the sky – nobody knew what it was because we’ve never seen it at the outdoor shoot before!
A big thank you to the members of Tayside Airgun Club for making everyone welcome and setting everything up for the day.
